Bäume können nicht sprechen? Bei uns schon!

Das Institut für Geographie widmet sich verstärkt den Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen – etwa dem Stadtklima und der Stadtvegetation, dem Klimawandel und der ökologischen Veränderungen in verschiedenen Regionen der Erde. Erlanger Wissenschaftler sind zudem an einem Projekt des bayerischen Forschungsverbundes FORKAST beteiligt, das die Auswirkungen klimatischer Extremereignisse auf Wälder an Trockenstandorten untersucht. Hier stehen vor allem die Zukunftschancen von Eichen und Rotbuchen im Brennpunkt, die ökologisch wie ökonomisch besonders wertvolle Baumbestände bilden.

Sie bearbeiten unter anderem Fragen wie: Wann und wie wächst eigentlich ein Baum? Und wie geht es einem Baum, der nicht im deutschen Wald wächst, sondern als Stadtbaum in einem Park einer mittelgroßen Stadt? Leidet er im Sommer unter Dürre und Schadstoffen und stellt gar teilweise sein Wachstum ein? Lassen sich hieraus vielleicht sogar Schlussfolgerungen ableiten, wie sich auch Waldbäume künftig verhalten werden, wenn im Zuge des Klimawandels die Sommer zunehmend heißer und trockener werden und somit immer dem Stadtklima ähneln? Der „twitternde Baum“ soll hierzu ergänzende Daten liefern und das Interesse insbesondere einer jüngeren Öffentlichkeit auf den Gesundheitszustand unserer Bäume lenken.

Der „Talking Tree“, die auserkorene, knapp 150 Jahre alte Stieleiche steht – passend zur Größe der Stadt – in einem der kleinsten botanischen Gärten Deutschlands und hat von dort aus eine perfekte Sicht auf die Altstadt rund um den Schlossplatz und den angrenzenden Schlosspark. Zukünftig berichtet der stattliche Baum regelmäßig über sein Befinden: Er teilt mit, wenn die Sonne seine Fotosynthese antreibt oder Regen seine Wurzeln tränkt. Er beklagt sich, wenn Ozon seine Atemwege reizt und freut sich, wenn er an Stärke zulegt. Er macht Bilder von seiner Umgebung und zeichnet singende Vögeln, das Säuseln des Windes oder Donnergrollen in seiner Umgebung auf.

Augen, Ohren und Stimme verleiht ihm modernste Technik, die bereits im März in der Eiche installiert und getestet wurde: Verschiedenste Messinstrumente überwachen das Wetter und das Pflanzenwachstum, eine Kamera schießt Fotos und ein Mikrofon lauscht auf Geräusche. Eine spezielle Software übersetzt diese Daten dann in verständliche Textbotschaften, die die Eiche ans Internet verschickt: Wer will kann ihr bei Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Youtube und Soundcloud zusehen, wie es ihr in den nächsten Monaten ergeht.
