Current projects
Success, limits and failure of subsistence strategies in eastern Central Europe during the Early Gravettian and the Last Glacial Maximum.
DFG project, 2020-2023 (co-applicants from Austrian Academy of Sciences/Austrian Archaeological Institute, University of Cologne, and Institute of Prehistory and Early History FAU)
The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ca. 24,000-19,000 cal BP) was, contrary to popular belief, a period of relative climatic stability and resurgent human populations. Rather, the most inhospitable climatic conditions of the entire Upper Paleolithic occurred during the preceding Late Gravettian (ca. 29,000-25,000 cal BP). The focus of the project is on a cluster of sites in Austria, Moravia, and southern Poland, which – although sparsely populated – was unlike other regions north of 50°N not affected by population collapse during this climatic inhospitable phase. This raises the following questions: what made the region special and what adaptive strategies did its inhabitants develop? To answer these questions, we compare the environmental conditions and archaeological evidence of the LGM with those of the Early Gravettian, a period of cultural flourishing and comparatively favorable climatic conditions. We combine archaeological analyses (e.g., of lithic and organic tools), osteoarchaeological information, and data on sedimentology and the paleoenvironment (geochemistry, stable isotopes, mollusks, and others).
Previous projects
ALPWÜRM: Environmental and climatic variability during the Middle Worm in the Northern Alps.
DFG project, 2016 – 2019
The last glacial, called Würmian in the Alpine region, was characterized by strong climate fluctuations (Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, Heinrich events) in the Northern Hemisphere. Outside the Greenland Ice Sheet and especially in the Alpine region these fluctuations and their effects on the environment are hardly documented. In the ALPWÜRM project, changes in vegetation, fauna and environmental conditions during the middle Würmian are investigated at the inner-Alpine locality Nesseltalgraben near Berchtesgaden (SE Bavaria) using a multi-proxy approach.

BMBF/MINCyT project, 2016 – 2018, co-applicants: Dr. J. Massaferro (Bariloche), Dr. A. Srur (Mendoza).
Synthesis of terrestrial climate archives in Patagonia was the focus of this project. The long-term goal of the Argentine-German collaborative project is to compare climate reconstructions based on oxygen isotope proxies in southern beech tree rings and lake sediments along a hydrological gradient caused by the lee effect of the Andes.

Oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of chironomids and ostracods in Patagonia as tools for quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions
DFG project, 2013-2014, co-applicants: Dr. C. Laprida (Buenos Aires), Dr. J. Massaferro (Bariloche).
The project investigated the potential of different organism remains commonly found in lake sediments for climate reconstruction. In the study area in southern Patagonia, oxygen isotope ratios of midge larval heads, ostracod valves, and aquatic macrophytes were tested for their suitability as quantitative environmental proxies.

PASADO-Isotope: Qualitative environmental and climatic reconstruction for the last glacial-interglacial cycles in southern Patagonia – the stable isotope record of the ICDP site Laguna Potrok Aike
DFG project, 2009 – 2012, co-applicant: Dr. A. Lücke (FZ-Jülich).
The project reconstructed the climate during the last glacial-interglacial cycle for the mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere (52°S). Drilling in the maar lake Laguna Potrok Aike in the dry steppe of southern Patagonia (Argentina) was carried out as part of the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP, http://www.icdp-online.org/front_content.php). Sediment cores up to 100 m long provided a unique archive of environmental and climatic variations in this region. The sediments were studied using a multi-proxy approach (geochronology, palynology, diatomology, paleomagnetics, geochemistry, stable isotopes) by an international team of researchers in the PASADO project (http://www.pasado.uni-bremen.de/).
In the PASADO isotopes subproject, the sedimentary organic material and lacustrine carbonates were geochemically studied. The organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes provided insights into lacustrine primary production and sources of organic matter. The oxygen and carbon isotopes of the carbonates and sedimentary cellulose recorded hydrologic changes in southern Patagonia. The results provide insights into temporal changes in the location and intensity of the southern hemispheric westerly wind circulation, and thus the distribution of moisture and energy in the southern hemisphere during the last ~50 000 years.

Climate changes in the Holocene and Late Glacial of New Zealand: Stable isotopes of lacustrine sediments of Lake Pupuke (Auckland volcanic field)
DFG project, 2007 – 2011, co-applicant: Dr. A. Lücke (FZ-Jülich)
In this project, hydrological changes during the Holocene of the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitudes were investigated using sediment cores from the crater lake Lake Pupuke on the North Island of New Zealand (Auckland) . Oxygen isotopes of lacustrine cellulose and biogenic sedimentary opal provided insights into temporal changes in lake water balance and water temperature. Isotopic ratios of sedimentary organic matter were used to detect changes in lacustrine primary production and material cycling in the lake.
